“Just as every raindrop, insect and leaf plays a special and important role in their ecosystem, so too do you. There is only one of you, with a unique heart, mind, ideas and skills. Will you join the rising wave, taking your place in the fight for our home?”

This week is Earth Week
As we head towards
Earth Day 2023
On Saturday
We will be using
A wide range of
Brilliant and beautiful books
To learn about the world
And what we can do to
Protect our planet
Through the week I will be
Sharing the books that we read
A selection of stunning
Illustrated non fiction books
Beautiful illustrated biographies
Narrative non fiction books
Middle grade eco adventures
Environmentally focused graphic novels
Picture books for little readers
We will be looking at
Real life activists
Past and present
We hope to inspire
Real life activists
Of the future
Many of the books
We plan to share this week
Show that we can all
Make a difference
We are all …
“Big enough
To save our trees
Resourceful enough
To reduce traffic pollution
Smart enough
To stop buying single-use plastic
Powerful enough
To preserve the environment
Compassionate enough
To protect the animals
Creative enough
To stamp out litter
Inspired enough
To eat locally-grown food
Know enough
To save the bees
Responsible enough
To make use of our food waste
Care enough
To clean up the ocean
Clever enough
To look for palm-oil alternatives
Dedicated enough
To save water”
Loll Kirby
And if we are not
All of these things
Then we should be!
Because time is running out
For our planet
And it is not up to our children
To save the planet
They will be the future custodians
Their time will come
And it is right and proper
That we gently educate them
About the world around them
And how to preserve and protect
The planet
But it is our time now
Our generation need to step up
Be aware
Be informed
Educate ourselves
And be the change our world
Our mother Earth
So desperately needs
It infuriates me
That my 12 year old twins
Know the changes we need
And can see ways to make them
But our governments cannot
It drives me CRAZY
That my five year old
Asks for a litter picker for Christmas
But governments cannot
Find ways to clean up
Our air, lands and seas
It is up to us
And we all need
To take action
Earth Day is a good time
To think about what you can do
As an individual
As a family
And books really are
A great way to start
They are filled with
Ideas and inspiration
To fire up minds
Young and old
Also, get outside
See and experiences
Our wonderful wild world
Know what it is
We are losing
“We have a dream
A dream for climate justice
A dream for a healthy planet
A dream for a fairer world for all”
Bird Girl, Dr Mya-Rose Craig
Let’s work together
To make that dream come true
