Music can give us a sudden surge of energy, inspire us, make us happy and evoke a
number of emotions. It’s a beautiful form of art which children can create. It brings
many benefits which is why in the UK, it’s a part of the national curriculum and is taught to
children between the ages of 5 and 14 at school. Beyond that point, children can choose
whether to continue. To learn more about the impact of music on children, we spoke with
teaching professionals of a school music department and here’s what they shared.
Identity
When they are young, children know very little about themselves, for example their talents
and interests. Music is a subject which enables them to do that. There are various types of
music too which gives them something to connect with others over.
Self-Expression
It’s also a form of expression and can help children in managing their emotions. They are in
full control of what they create so it’s something which they can pour their heart and soul
into.
Creative Thinking
To create new music or even work out how to play to something that you have heard before
requires creative thinking. This practice can help children in developing other core thinking
skills such as problem solving and critical thinking which rely on the ability to form new,
innovative ideas.
Fun
Everyone needs time to themselves, to do what makes them happy. School can be draining
and having something like music which they enjoy can give them something to look forward
to.
Memory
Learning to play an instrument also exercises the part of the brain responsible for
remembering things. This is known as the hippocampus and is strengthened by learning
new things. Aside from just learning how to play, in their music lessons, they will need to
learn how to play different songs and remember them.
Self-Esteem
Just like learning any skill, perfecting musical talent takes time and patience. They will need
to be consistent and exercise resilience. Also, as they see the progress that they’ve made
and what they’re capable of, their self-esteem will grow.
Focus
In music you are trained to pay attention to the smallest of details, for example when
differentiating between notes. This can help to build focus and concentration.
