Everything You Know About Minibeasts Is WRONG!

We love minibeasts!
It is a subject we revisit in our home education
Every summer
Each year I am amazed how much my little learners know
And amazed by how much we learn
There is ALWAYS more to know about insects

They have lived on our planet for the last 400 million years
Two thirds of the species of animals
That scientists have discovered on Earth
Are insects

There are more than 200 million insects
For every single human being on this planet
AND
Insects belong to a larger group of animals
Arthropods
And there are 10 quintillion of them
Here on Earth

And a tiny selection of them
Are the ones we know about
Learn about
And are in complete awe of
Year after year after year

As a family of minibeast enthusiasts
We have LOVED reading
Everything You Know About Minibeasts is WRONG!
Written by Dr. Nick Crumpton and
Illustrated by Gavin Scott

These two truly know their stuff
And they are debunking minibeast myths in style
In this brilliant and beautiful non fiction book
Published by Nosy Crow

This is a must for every primary classroom
And it is pitch perfect for home educators too

Come and have a look inside and see
You and your little readers will learn so much
We were exclaiming “What?!”
At the turn of every page

Here are some of our favourite facts
Found nestled in the stunning pages of this book
The artwork is stunning
And lets children feel that they are getting up close
To these tiny mighty creatures

1 – The four main types of arthropods are insects, myriapods, arachnids and crustaceans
2 – Snails are more closely related to octopuses than any minbeasts
3 – Bees are vegetarian wasps

4 – Honeybees can recognise human faces
5 – Dung Beetles navigate using the Milky Way in the night sky
6 – Desert Ants measure distance by counting their steps
7 – No centipede in the world has 100 legs
8 – Leafcutter Ants are eaten like popcorn in Colombia

9 – There is a cockroach that looks exactly like a ladybird
10 – Earwigs are fantastic parents
11 – Forcipomyia Midges pollinate cocoa so give us chocolate
12 – Mealworm larvae help reduce pollution as they eat polystyrene

This is such a wonderful book
One that will build children’s knowledge of minibeasts
And so make them feel more confident around them
Readers of this book can use the facts they learn
To defend minibeasts from the injustice of misinformation

Minibeasts need us to do that that
They need us to lend them our voices
They need us to know about them
So that we can care about them
So we might protect them and their habitats

“Humans – by building things, spraying chemicals, destroying habitats and moving species around the world – have caused the number of minibeasts in the world to shrink over the last 100 years, and a big reason why is that not very many people cared about them.”

Now we know we need them
And they need us
Put this book in the hands of a child
And help them help the planet
By standing up for minibeasts
And telling the truth about these
Interesting, incredible, inspiring little creatures
