Book Review: Beetles For Breakfast

Climate change is a serious topic

There is no escaping the severity of the situation that we are in

But with children we need to ensure that we are not frightening them

We can be solemn without being wholly negative

We need to show children that there is hope

Because there is

Beetles for Breakfast is a climate crisis book for older children

And is also incredibly informative and educational for adults too

It takes this important topic, this grave situation

And puts a fantastically imaginative and positive spin on it

While showing children the amazing things people around the world are doing

To fight climate change and to protect our planet

It also highlights for us all the things that we can be doing

To play our parts as stewards and guardians of the Earth

Beetles For Breakfast and Other Weird and Wonderful Ways To Save The Planet

Shows us how today’s scientists are finding creative ways to help us protect the
environment

And improve our lifestyles

From the breakfast table to the park

From the city to the farm

From the beach to home

This book explores the different solutions scientists are coming up with

To future proof our lives and protect the planet

And yes, beetles for breakfast is one of the slightly bonkers

Wonderfully imaginative, awe inspiring ways

We can all make a difference

Around two billion people worldwide

Are already enjoying insects in their lunches

Minibeasts are in fact rich in protein, iron and calcium

One of the things that we are doing as a family

Is trying to eat less meat and to have more plant based meals

Insects being full of vitamins and minerals are a great meat alternative

Finding meat alternatives and reducing cattle farming

And with that methane production

Could really help our planet

This is one of the ideas that we already knew about

But in the pages of this brilliant book

There are hundreds of awesome new ideas

Mirrors that scan your eyes, skin and breath

To check for symptoms of illness

Using poo to heat our homes

Using kelp forests to generate electricity

Reusing plastic as footpaths and roads

Tree turbines

Wildlife corridors including Roads for Toads

This striking book

Is not telling us about the problems the world faces

It is sharing the innovative solutions that people are coming up with

Inspiring children and their grown ups

Generating conversations

Igniting imaginations

Getting children talking about the problems, the solutions

And what we all can do to help

Problems as big as the climate emergency

As biodiversity loss

They require big solutions

They need creative, pioneering, wacky ideas

No idea is too crazy

Because what might seem impossible or ridiculous now

Could be normal in a few decades time

Normal yet making a revolutionary difference to our planet

And all who live here

I love this book

And I know that my children do

Every time one of them picks it up

They keep exclaiming and telling me about the latest bananas idea

They have discovered

I hope that by reading books like this one

My little people will be inspired to come up with wild and whacky ideas of their own

I hope that we will all start to make some changes right now

To get the eco-ball rolling

And begin making the world a cleaner, greener place

We already turn lots of our rubbish into art

We recycle our rainwater

We shout about climate change to all who will listen

We are rewilding much of our garden

And trying to eat less meat

I know that there is so much more for us to do

For us all to do

And reading incredible books like this one

Are a great way to start

Over the coming 12 days I will be sharing books linked to climate change

To climate action

At home our education will be focused around protecting our planet

And thinking about what we can do to make a difference

Because no action is too small

And one day my beautiful little bookworms

Inspired by books like this one

May become inventors, conservationists, activists, engineers, farmers or architects

One day they may be leading the way to a bright, cool future

I think they already are x
