Book Review: Lottie Loves Nature

This week Bea, Edie and I have been reading Lottie Loves Nature

We have read Frog Frenzy and Bee-ware!

And … we loved them both!

Written by Jane Clark and illustrated by James Brown

These books from Five Quills Children’s Books

Are perfect for newly independent readers

And make great readalouds

Edie, 4 and Bea, 6

Were both completely engaged with these as I read them aloud

Even Esther, age 10, came to listen

These cleverly constructed books offer a brilliant mix

Of stories and information about the natural world

Lottie is a likeable character who has her heart set on protecting ‘Every Little Thing’

Inspired by her favourite nature show

Lottie loves nature and is determined to look after the wildlife in and around her garden

She also protects little creatures from her next door neighbour who is only interested in

His pristeen putting green!!

Through the pages of these books

A marvellous mix of fact files, scrap book pages, experiments and activity ideas

We have learned about why ants are important, food chains and the circle of life

We have learned about hydrophonics, why worms are wonderful and how to make a wormery

We have looked at the frog life cycle and read about different types of frogs

We have also learned how and why to make a mini pond in our garden

All of these facts are wrapped up in fiction

The story of Lottie saving the wildlife from her neighbour, Mr Parfitt

The man with fake grass and a determination to rid his garden

Of all creatures great and small

The stories are funny and filled with mishaps and mayhem

Lottie’s love of nature shines through and her determination to do the right thing

Has really inspired my little ones to love nature too and to do their bit

To protect wildlife and save the planet

In Bee-ware! readers can see how to conduct their own minibeast survey

Why we need bugs and bees

What makes bees so amazing

Life inside a honeybee hive

Which plants bees like

How to make a butterfly feeder and a bug hotel

These books are a wonderful resource for home education

As you can read the stories together and carry out the suggested activities as you go along

Children can also create their own nature scrapbook and factfiles like Lottie

Another clever element of these books

Is the character of Noah, the neighbour’s son

He helps Lottie with her conservation projects

And has a passion of his own

He wants to be one of the first people to live on Mars

Noah is passionate about technology and innovation

He is excited for the future

And the inclusion of Noah’s Next Level notes

Help little readers understand how technology and nature can co exist

Through Noah nature enthusiasts can learn about helpful robots

Useful plastics, exoskeletons, edible insects

Marsbee robots, life and living on Mars

These excerpts are the bits that hooked William into the stories

These are such fabulous books

Filled with facts and fun

Perfect for inspiring curious little explorers

We have LOVED getting to know Lottie

And hope that there will be more nature adventures to come

If you love the books and want to try out some of the activities

There some fab free printables at the Five Quills website

We were sent two books in exchange for an honest review
