Today is Day 9 of our extended Book Advent. Today we read Refuge written by @anneboothauthor and illustrated by @samuel_usher Refuge tells a tale we are all familiar with, the story of the nativity, the birth of Jesus Christ. A little baby born in a stable, laid in a manger and a refugee just hours after his birth. Refuge tells the story of the first Christmas from the point of view of the donkey. The voice is solemn in it’s retelling. There are not many words but the ones chosen are powerful. The shepherds come, the kings and then after they have left … Joseph has a dream. A dream of danger. The book lays out the facts of the story simply but talks about the love between a mother and her baby in beautiful poetry. Before the sun rises the family set off “…under the starlight, through empty streets, whilst people were sleeping, hoping for the kindness of strangers.” The family are on the move, heading for Egypt seeking sanctuary, searching for refuge. Jesus Christ began his life as a refugee, loved by his parents, hoping for the kindness of strangers. A timely and timeless retelling of the Christmas story, perfect for Remembrance Day, perfect for the world we now live in, inspired by refugee children everywhere. £1 from the sale of this book will be given to War Child. #refuge #warstories #refugeestories #remembrancestories #christmasstories #thechristmasstory #thenativity #warchild #bookadvent #bookadvent2020 #edspirereads #edspirereadschristmas #booksforchildren #booksforchristmas @nosycrow @warchilduk
