My Naughty Little Sister

Did you read My Naughty Little Sister as a child?

I absolutely loved these stories

Written by Dorothy Edwards

And illustrated by the ever inspiring Shirley Hughes

This day in 1914 Dorothy Edwards was born

So in memory of her

In honour of her work

I have been reading My Naughty Little Sister stories with my children

We read too topical tales today

The Bonfire Pudding and

The Naughtiest Story of All

These are such wonderful stories

And reading them reminds me of being a child

I loved these books when I was an early independent reader

And I love reading them again now to my own children

Please read the Instagram caption below

To find out why the two stories we read today

Are perfect as we leave Bonfire Night behind

And start to think about Christmas

I LOVE My Naughty Little Sister. I remember reading them as a child and loving them. When I read the stories now to myself I hear the voice I read with as a child. It evokes such strong memories for me. I loved these books so much and I read them now to my own children which brings me great great joy especially at this time of year. Two of my favourite stories are The Naughtiest Story of All and The Bonfire Pudding. Perfect stories to read aloud as autumn fades to winter and all thoughts turn to advent and Christmas. The Bonfire Pudding is set on Bonfire Night. Much like my own littlest children My Naughty Little Sister does not like fireworks. She finds comfort from the bangs and the smell with her Granny who has an important job to do. Together they make the Family Christmas Puddings. It is so lovely seeing grandmother and granddaughter together laughing and chatting and making the puddings. There is such love between the two. Together they make a wish on the Christmas pudding mixture. On Christmas Day the pudding is served and Father pours brandy on it and lights the pudding. Now, says My Naughty Little Sister, it is a real bonfire pudding. The Naughtiest Story of All tells how My Naughty Little Sister does not like Father Christmas at all! One day Father Christmas comes to school and younger siblings are invited to meet him. My Naughty Little Sister very reluctantly goes along and very much enjoys the Christmas party with singing and sweet treats and pretty decorations. On the tree there is a pretty doll with a blue dress that My Naughty Little Sister likes very much. When Father Christmas arrives the little children go up to meet him and choose a gift from the tree. My Naughty Little Sister sees this and worried that someone will choose the doll she marches straight up to Father Christmas and says, “That doll, please.” Everyone laughs and Father Christmas is of course very kind and he gives her the doll she likes so much. And what do you think she does? It is the naughtiest story of all and you must read it to find out the very naughty thing she does. But the story has a lovely ending and My Naughty Little Sister kept the doll until she was a grown up
