Here We Are: CLPE Words For The World

In July 2020, CLPE released their recovery curriculum teaching notes to support primary children with the transition back into school in September.

These notes are based on Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth by Oliver Jeffers

Over 13,000 teachers registered to receive the notes and used them in their classrooms

CLPE wanted to encourage a sense of community across the entire school, to help teachers and children reflect on the last academic year, and help whole schools look forward to the future in a positive way

As a home educating family we also adopted this recovery curriculum to start our new academic year

We took parts that we liked from each of the primary age groups and adapted them to fit with our home learning

We read lots of nature books and poetry

We spent a lot of time outside e

We wrote songs and poems inspired by books and the world around us

We wrote letters to Earth

Our words for the world

Here are some of the things we have been doing throughout September

Inspired by Oliver Jeffers, Here We Are

And the wonderful work of the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education

We have bad such a wonderful time writing and sharing our words for the world with @clpe.org.uk It has been the loveliest start to our new academic year. We have learned about the planet we live on, our place in the universe, how to protect the earth and the oceans. We have written letters to Earth, poems and songs. We have created a rainbow of art work. We have developed our learning skills and challenged ourselves to have a growth mindset. We have learned how to be present through mindfulness and we have talked lots about our feelings. We have loved such special learnt time together as a family and being out in nature discovering and exploring together. Today we join with writers, families, teachers and pupils at schools across the country and the globe to share our #clpewordsfortheworld Thank you @oliverjeffers for the inspiration. What a wonderful way to start a new year. Here We Are. Also, what a wonderful day for @davidattenborough to join instagram as children and creators come together to offer their words for the world x #wordsfortheworld

This week much of our work is based on @oliverjeffers Here We Are using ideas from the wonderful sequence of learning from @clpe.org.uk Today’s activity was to write a letter to a special person. We adapted this to use one of our favourite books to think about who we have Under The Love Umbrella. We talked about our family and friends, the people we hold dear and shared some of our favourite memories and things to do with our special people. The big children then drew some of their favourite memories of their special people and wrote a caption. Edie painted an umbrella and together we wrote down the people she loves on raindrops and stuck them underneath her umbrella. This was a lovely activity. William wanted to draw and write about everyone he knows. Under The Love Umbrella is a wonderful book written by @davina.bell with stunning illustrations by @al_colps The Book is a wonderful reminder for us all that we are never on our own. People we love are with us and thinking of us, loving us. This would be a beautiful gift for a child starting or returning to school. It is the perfect book for anyone who is anxious about heading out into our new normal world. It offers love and reassurance and comfort as the world opens up again. @scribblekidsbooks #bookishwaytoplay #bookstagram #bookishwaytolearn #bookishlearning #childrensbooks #undertheloveumbrella #hereweare #kidsbooks #kidsbookstagram #childrenspicturebooks #picturebooksofinstagram #booksaremagic #lovemakesafamily #booklove #readandlearn #homelearning #homeeducation #homeeducationuk #homeed

Yesterday as part of our work using ideas from @clpe.org.uk and the @oliverjeffers book Here We Are, we wrote our own version of the classic song What A Wonderful World. We watched a wonderful video of David Attenborough reciting the song showing stunning nature scenes from all over the globe. It was really emotional and made us all feel a sense of awe and wonder about the world around us. We listened to the song and read the beautiful picture book illustrated by @timhopgood Esther and William then wrote their own version of the Louis Armstrong classic while Bea and Edie drew the things they love in our wonderful world. Edie drew a volcano and Bea a beautiful rainbow ocean with a diving dolphin. This was a lovely activity inspired by #hereweare #clpewordsfortheworld

For the last couple of weeks we have been dipping in and out of the @clpe.org.uk sequence of learning for the the @oliverjeffers book Here We Are. One of the suggested activities is to enjoy time outside together, to read poetry outside together and then write poetry out in the wild. Today, or rather this evening, Esther, William and I did just that. To celebrate #internationalliteracyday we headed out for our evening walk with Out and About, a poetry book by Shirley Hughes and we wrote our own Out and About poem. Playing games Running around Leaves falling Frosty ground Golden sunset Naked trees Leaves dancing Autumn breeze Making camp Fire cooking Minibeast hunts Just looking Park picnics Bird migration Conker collection Hedgehog hibernation Picking apples Harvest here Celebrate A busy year Watch birds Climb trees Search rockpools Swim seas Be together Having fun Out and about Everyone

What a hot September day!! We headed to the sea, our favourite #matildamae beach. We paddled and swam, had a picnic, played ball, watched the seagulls and gazed at the horizon dreaming of what might be out there in the mists of the heatwave! We took some of our favourite ocean books with us to red together on the shore and to help us practise our mindfulness. My Ocean is Blue is a stunning illustrated ode to the sea. @darrenlebeuf and @_ashleybarron_ have created a beautiful picture book for all ocean lovers. The striking style and colours in the pictures draw you in to a day on the beach with a little girl as she swims, climbs rocks, investigates rockpools and more. It made us think what we love about the sea, what we think of when we think about the ocean and what we like to do at the beach. We came home and wrote our own poems. Poems called This Is My Ocean. The children would love you to read them. They are all so special and different from one another. Please do zoom in to read Esther’s as I know she worked so hard and is so proud of her poem. A wonderful mindful day, a last stolen moment of summer x @kidscanpress

Today we read the beautiful book Dear Earth by @isabel_otter and @claraanganuzzi published by @littletigerbooks Esther and William then wrote their own letters to Earth and Bea drew a picture of something on Earth she thinks is amazing. I am so incredibly proud of the children’s letters. William absolutely loved this book and writing his letter sharing the wonders of the Earth and asking people to join together to protect our planet. Please do read their letters and let us know what you think. I will be sharing more about this gorgeous picture book tomorrow.
