24 Family Days Out in Kent

We are very lucky to live in the beautiful county of Kent

There is always lots going on

And there are lots of wonderful places to visit

As a home educating family

We try to get out for lots of adventures

In and around the county

Over the course of the coming year

I am going to be sharing our ‘edventures’ here on the blog

Before I begin doing that I thought I would share a round up

Of some of the places we visited last year

I have shared these places on Instagram

And so this year I will revisit and write up a full review for the blog

Here are some snippets of our visits

To show you just some of the places that will feature here this year

Walmer Castle

View this post on Instagram

On the 5th day of January we went to Walmer Castle and Gardens in Deal. It was our first visit but will definitely not be our last. Esther and William lived exploring the castle with the multi media guide and we all loved the gardens and especially the woodland trail. There are lots of lovely natural play areas around the walk and beautiful wooden bird sculptures to find. There is a glen to discover that is an old chalk quarry. The children used chalk from the ground to draw on tree trunk blackboards. We had such a wonderful time exploring and playing together. We had a lovely cream tea and a play on the beach to end our day. We learned a lot looking round the castle and the grounds. This is a beautiful place for all the family to enjoy. We will definitely be back again very soon. @englishheritage @visitdeal @visitkent #kent #deal #kentcoast #walmercastle #walmercastlegardens #kentkids #kentblogger #familydaysout #kentdaysout #daysoutkent #daysoutinkent #daysoutwithkids #daysoutwiththekids #daysoutuk #letthembelittle #letthemexplore #letthemplay #letthembewild #wildlingexplorers #edspireedventures #edspireedventure #livingfortilda #homeedadventures

Kent Life Farm

View this post on Instagram

On the 4th day of January we spent a wonderful sunny day @kent_life_farm We spent a lot of time feeding the animals, rode the train, went to cuddle corner and enjoyed Mrs Back To Front’s Magic Show. Bea was chosen to be a helper and she loved it! We were there from doors open to gates shut and had a wonderful time exploring the farm. A day for the memory books with Nanny and Grandpa! #edspireedventures #edspireedventure #wildlingwanders #wildlingexplorers #kentlifefarm #kentlife #daysoutkent #daysoutinkent #daysoutinkentwithchildren #daysoutinkentwithkids #kentdaysout #kentkids #kentfamily #daysoutwithkids #daysoutwiththekids #daysoutwiththefamily #kent #maidstone #kentblogger #myhappymoments #myhappycapture #maketheordinaryextraordinary #letthembelittle #letthembewild #wildlingexplorers #wheremywelliestakeme #livingfortilda

Knole Park

View this post on Instagram

Today we went to @ntknole to see The Tiger Who Came To Tea exhibition and compete the tiger trail. We also wanted to wander through the deer park but it was colder than I had anticipated and Edie was really cold. We did get up close to some beautiful deer though and the children all came home with cuddly tigers, their prize for completing the trail. The exhibition was lovely. Edie has great fun dressed up as the tiger and acting out the story in a small play kitchen. Esther, William and Bea loves longing on tiger orange bean bags reading Judith Kerr books. Another advent activity ticked off our list. Deal Castle

View this post on Instagram

This weekend we found a new to us castle with @englishheritage Deal Castle, a Tudor Fortress. We had a lovely time exploring the castle and learning about Henry VIII. William loves all the cannons. We all loved taking a musket and exploring the dark flooded dungeons. There was a castle building challenge that the children got stuck into. For a relatively small castle it has lots to see and do and is engaging for little children. William declared Deal his new favourite castle to visit. It is perfect for some historical role play and to run around in on a rainy day. It is also on the beach so a really fun way to spend a day with a picnic. We will definitely be going back again. #edspireedventures

Pepenbury

View this post on Instagram

We discovered @pepenburyncs this week. A place I have wanted to explore for ages. Pepenbury is in Pembury and is part of Aspens, a charity that supports adults with additional needs. They have a small animal barn, some farm animals, a lovely little cafe where we were served by one of the nicest ladies I have ever met. Everyone we met at Pepenbury was really kind and welcoming. The woods were the highlight. A lovely toddler friendly circular walk with lots to discover and explore. Musical sculptures, Play houses and a natural play area. The children were able to run and roam and play. It was just what we all needed. A place to play. On this rainy autumn day we were the only ones there which made it all the more magical. A forest of our own! We will definitely be back. The children really loved exploring Pepenbury. We hear it is especially magical if you can get there when there is snow on the ground. #lovewhereyoulive #lovewhereyoudwell #ourbackyard #kent #pembury #daysoutkent #daysoutinkent #kentdaysout #daysoutwiththekids #daysoutwithkids #kentmums #kentmummy #kentblogger #explorekent #kentfamily #pepenbury #autumninkent @visitkent #edspireedventures

Bodiam Castle

View this post on Instagram

If you are looking for a fun family day out before school goes back, have a look at Bodiam Castle. There are armour and weaponry talks, Knight training missions, a mini trebuchet to fire, costumes to try on and even hay bale hurdles! There are ducks and giant fish in the moat, the castle to explore and towers to climb. There is ice cream and coffee and plenty of space for free range play in a beautiful historical setting. @nationaltrust @bodiamcastlent #daysoutwithkids #daysoutwiththekids #daysouteastsussex #bodiamcastle #bodiam #kent #daysoutinkentandsussex #daysoutkent #daysoutinkent #kentdaysout #edspireedventures #summerholidays #summerholidays2019 #familyfun #nationaltrustsussex

Port Lympne Walk

View this post on Instagram

Today we went on a walk known as the Kent Safari or the Port Lympne Loop. This 2.7 mile walk starts in the village of Lympne walks past Lympne Castle and the old Roman Fort down to The Military Canal. The route you take follows the perimeter fence of @portlympnepark safari. You can hear the commentary from the passing trucks and get up close to some beautiful animals. And all for free! It is all public footpaths and bridleways. Parts of the walk are very steep and it is not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs. Edie was carried a lot of the way. But oh my goodness! What a way to spend an afternoon. We saw so many animals including antelope, bison, zebra, rhinos and my most favourite animals giraffes. Scroll through the pictures to see the video of them walking past us. It was amazing! A truly wonderful experience! We love Port Lympne but at over £100 for a family of six to visit it is not something we can afford to do. The children LOVED today. We were able to sit and eat our picnic watching the animals. When not looking at the animals the sea views are breathtaking. This is a truly awe inspiring place to go for a walk and we will definitely be doing it again. It is only 30 minutes from our house. The children now all want to go into the reserve and see more of the many animals at #PortLympne and learn about their conservation work and breeding programmes. But while we are saving our pennies we will always have our memories of today and a chance to take friends and family on this Kentish Safari #kentwalks #walksinkent #daysoutwithkids #daysout #giraffes #animalpark #portlympnehotelandreserve #kentishsafari #kentsafari #kentdaysout #daysoutkent #daysoutinkent #daysoutwithkids #daysoutwiththekids #walkinginkent #myhappycapture #kentlife #kent #edspireedventures #maketheordinaryextraordinary #magicineveryday #childhoodunplugged

Jeskyns Community Woodland

View this post on Instagram

Last night we went on a Gruffalo Hunt at Jeskyns Community Woodland. We were actually at the country park primarily to visit their fairy village. We also enjoyed exploring their two natural playgrounds and saying hello to Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler much lived characters from The Gruffalo. It was more of a meet and greet than a hunt. We are used to roaming the wilds of Bedgebury and searching for the characters. Here at Jeskyns they are all laid out around the play area. Perfect for play, perfect for little legs and pushchairs but disappointing for my wildlings who were geared up for a romp through the deep dark woods. Jeskyns is wild and wide open. Wildflower meadows and woodland rather than forest. The play areas are lovely and the children had fun exploring them. The little cafe at Jeskyns is lovely and the coffee is good. Jeskyns seems perfect for dog walkers and young children. The fairy village is lovely and we had a magical afternoon and evening lost along the trees and in our imaginative play. It just wasn’t @lovebedgebury #edspireedventures #jeskynscountrypark #thegruffalotrail #thegruffalo #juliadonaldsonandaxelscheffler #juliadonaldson #axelscheffler #bookishplay #bookinspiredplay #childrensbooks #childrensbookstagram #toddlerplay #kentdaysout #daysoutwithkids #daysoutwiththekids #familydaysout #daysoutkent #daysoutinkent #kentkids #kent #letthemplay #letthemexplore #littleexplorers #letthembewild #letkidsbekids #letthembelittle #childhoodunplugged #livingfortilda

The Big Cat Sanctuary

View this post on Instagram

We have had a wonderful day @thebigcatsanctuaryuk learning all about their cats and food chains. Our day included a guided tour around the sanctuary and a workshop. This was our second home education visit following the same format. We had a wonderful time and learned lots about the cats, their habits and habitats. We learned about the work of the sanctuary too. We are very lucky to have The Big Cat Sanctuary so close to home. I hope that we will be able to visit again soon. #bigcatsanctuarykent #bigcatsanctuary #bigcats #mayathejaguar #willowthecheetah #bigcatskent #edspireedventures #homeed #homeeducation #homeeducator #homeeducationuk #learningtogether #aweandwonder #littleexplorers #letthemexplore #familylearning #kentdaysout #kentkidsdaysout #daysoutkent #daysoutinkent #daysoutwithkids #daysoutwiththekids @visitkent

Buttercups Goat Sanctuary

View this post on Instagram

William had one request for his birthday to visit @buttercupsgoats and cuddle some goats. So yesterday with some of our lovely home ed friends we headed to The Goat Sanctuary just 10 minutes from our house. Here we found shade and plenty of goats to befriend. We paid a donation to enter the sanctuary and £1 per bag of food. For the goats. The children could choose to feed them carrots, crackers or pasta. It was so hot but such a special experience and as we are so local I think we will be spending a lot of time here going forward as William absolutely loves goats. It is such a lovely little place with yummy cake and great coffee. The goats all have names and stories and have been rescued or retired here. They loved the attention from the children and the children really loved just sitting with them and talking to them and stroking them. William’s dream day out! I love my super special goat whisperer son x

Blooming Green

View this post on Instagram

We have recently discovered @bloominggreen just down the road from our house. It is a wonderful flower farm where you can go and pick your own flowers. It is popular for weddings and special occasions. We were very lucky to go there with a small group of home ed friends as part of an art club we attended last term. We spent the morning there and because we had the place to ourselves the children were able to explore at their leisure. We all picked flowers for pressing and decorating our homes and in our case to use in our play! The children were running round bare foot and Edie loved feeling the mud between her toes. The children played hide and seek among the blooms. All the children aged 2 to 12 loved picking their own flowers. Bea especially enjoyed it! We took some of our flower themed books and toys from @threadbear.design with us and read and played while enjoying the beautiful surroundings. We will definitely be going back over the summer and highly recommend a visit for anyone in Kent who likes flowers. They have open days with coffee and food and they have a little gift shop too. A lovely local small business that is fun to support x #lovewhereyoudwell #lovewhereyoulive #kent #maidstone #flowers #pyoflowers #pickyourownflowers #letthembewild #letthemexplore #letthemexplorenature #explorenaturewithchildren #natureplay #homeed #homeeducation #homeeducationuk #edspireedventures #playfullearning #childhoodunplugged #myhappycapture #treasureeverymoment #magicineveryday #maketheordinaryextraordinary @visit_maidstone @visitkent #daysoutwithkids #daysoutwiththekids #daysoutkent #daysoutinkent #kentdaysout #mywildlings

Tonbridge Town Sailing Club

View this post on Instagram

So very proud of Esther and William. They loved Day 2 of their @royalyachtingassociation Junior Level 1 sailing course with Tonbridge Town Sailing Club. They learned so much! They made new friends, learned new skills, a whole new vocabulary and I have never seen their faces so excited and their grins so wide. Esther is especially was so proud of herself. She knows that she has done good. They have both done so well and I am so proud of them. Esther and William are excited for doing their Level 2 in September and William is already looking ahead to Level 3. They are also hoping to go along to Junior Sailing Club with their new friends, cousins and Home Ed friends. A lifetime of sailing adventures awaits! #ryalevel1 #tonbridgesailing #tonbridgetownsailingclub #haysdenpark #haysdencountrypark #edspireedventures #swallowsandamazons #swallowsandamazonsforever #sailinglife #sailingclub #juniorsailingclub #sailing⛵️ #Sailing #youngsailors #onthewater #haysdenwater #twinstagram #twinmomma #twinmama #twinmummy #proudmama #proudmummy #proudmummymoment #mymotherhood #myhappycapture #happinesscaptured

So proud of my big kids today who started their RYA Level 1 Sailing Course @tonbridgetownsailingclub The wind was quite fierce at points throughout the day. Some of the gusts were very strong and we watched them rolling over the lake before they hit. Esther and William were incredibly brave and described learning to sail a bit like going on a rollercoaster in that it is great fun but a bit scary sometimes. By the end of day one they had much better control of their boats and a bigger respect for weather than at the start of the day. Esther and William also both came away with new friends which is really lovely. Roll on day 2 next Saturday. #learntosail #ryalevel1 @royalyachtingassociation #edspireedventures #sailinglife #sailing #sailingclub #juniorsailingclub #haysdencountrypark #tonbridgesailing #tonbridgesailingclub #tonbridgetownsailingclub #wearesailing #getoutside #30dayswild #sailaway #swallowsandamazonsforever #swallowsandamazons

Headcorn Aerodrome

View this post on Instagram

Today we went to @headcorn_aerodrome_official and our timing was perfect. We saw a lovely old biplane and were treated to a private air show by a pilot doing aerobatics. It was breathtaking to watch as the pilot flew upside down, loop the loop, nose dived towards the sky, span 360 degrees, tumbled and turned. It was so exciting and quite terrifying to watch. We love popping to see the planes at the airfield and I am so very glad that we did today. We have been looking at some flight themed books so this was a perfect little excursion to bring the books alive. #bringbooksalive #bookish #bookishplay #chatplayread #edspireedventures #daysoutwithkids #daysoutinkent #daysoutkent #kent #kentdaysout #headcornaerodrome #headcornairfield #headcorn #theweald @visitkent

Scotney Castle

View this post on Instagram

We had a lovely late afternoon @scotneygarden_nt today searching for eggs 🥚 with @nationaltrust and learning all about birds. Around the gardens were 10 purple bird boxes. Each box contained information about a bird and a clutch of eggs one of which had a letter. We had to collect the letters to spell out the name of a bird. Scotney Castle gardens are so beautiful, lots of nooks and crannies to explore and space to run around. It also has a wonderful playground with a mud kitchen and a ball run and a wooden drum kit amongst other lovely things. They have a second hand bookshop which I am hoping to go back and explore. A lovely way to while away a spring afternoon. Bewl Water

View this post on Instagram

Today we did our first organised egg hunt of Easter 🐣 2019. We went to one of our favourite family places @bewlwater to try their Easter trail. Our verdict … it was okay! A picture map led us to little wooden houses around the woods and play areas. Each house contained a picture of an egg with a letter on, you collected the letters and sorted them to make a word … chocolate. The trail was free and every child got a small piece of Brownie with a mini egg on top for taking part. We experienced all weathers at the reservoir today, four seasons in one day. After the trail and lunch and a play it was time to help Grandad with the boat. Now we are ready for a summer of sailing. Swallows and Amazons adventures ahoy!

Godinton House and Gardens

View this post on Instagram

We had a truly magical afternoon @godintonhouse open this week for their #springweek Today was Meet The Lambs and I am so glad we went. The children did love the lambs but they also loved exploring the gardens. We had a wonderful afternoon playing Hide and Seek, chasing each other in and out of bushes, rolling down the banks, making daisy chains and a whole host of other things. We played on the swing and rode a tree trunk train. We found Voldermort and put our names in The Goblet of Fire. Such beautiful gardens perfect for pretending to be knights and princesses. Perfect for exploration and adventure. William has declared that he loves Godinton. There is something very special about it. We will definitely be back in the autumn. #godintonhouse #godinton #kent #familydaysout #daysoutwithkids #daysoutwiththekids #kentdaysout #daysoutuk #daysoutkent #daysoutinkent #edspireedventures @visitkent #kent #easter2019 #easter #spring

Bedgebury Pinetum

View this post on Instagram

Hello! Happy Monday! We had a wonderful wild and windy weekend. On Saturday we went to @lovebedgebury for a Gruffalo hunt. The children were so disappointed with Jeskyns Country Park that going to Bedgebury felt very much like coming home. The Jeskyns Gruffalo Play Area is perfect for toddlers for bigger Gruffalo fans Bedgebury offers more adventure and a chance to explore the forest and really hunt for the characters while making unexpected discoveries along the way. I know that some people have complained to Bedgebury that The Gruffalo sculptures are too hard to find but we love that they are so spread out and that the hunt leads you to parts of the forest you might not otherwise discover and explore. We have been members at Bedgebury for years and no two visits are ever the same. We often do The Gruffalo trail here. We tend to do it when Daddy can come with us as unless you have a true off road buggy and a strong pusher the route is not great for buggies. We always go armed with food and have a picnic midway, often in the magical dell where Owl can be found. We love roaming and rambling through the woods. We love that no matter how busy the pinetum is you can spend a whole day there and not see another soul. We often take books, toys and art materials and set up little camps throughout the day. Bedgebury is definitely one of our happy places. The cafe is great and the play trail is brilliant especially during term time when it is less busy. We are planning on doing some of our science lessons here throughout the autumn term. Have you been to Bedgebury? What do you like about it best?

Following the #zogtrail @lovebedgebury today meant that we discovered the new play equipment on the play trail. We found some old favourites too and had a lovely time playing together as a family. The thing that captured all our hearts and imaginations the most was the play kitchen / woodland camp. The children quickly set about collecting food and firewood, preparing and serving meals. They had a lovely time making camp and embarking on adventures. I have promised that we will return on a sunny day, take lots of food and drink, books and our learning for the day and spend a day there. We love Bedgebury because even on the busiest of days you can always find a peaceful spot to just be … probably not at the mud kitchen of dreams though!!#bedgebury #bedgeburyplaytrail #bedgeburypinetum #curiouslittleexplorers #littleexplorer #edspireedventures #daysoutkent #daysoutinkent #kentdaysout #kent #outdoorplay #letthembewild #mudkitchen #natureplay #playmatters #playislearning #letthemplay #letthembewild #letthembelittle

Whitstable

View this post on Instagram

Such a lovely evening by the sea. We drove to Whitstable, our favourite place in Kent to watch the setting sun. We had an hour or so paddling in the sea before buying fish and chips and ice cream for our tea by the sea. It is such a simple way to spend the end of a day and every time we do it I say we should do it more often and this year we really will, have tea by the sea more often. The sea is where we feel closest to Tilda. Our star of the sea. Where the ocean meets the sky. Edie had a wonderful time. She thought the sea was a swimming pool which shows it has been way too long for her since she was last beside the sea. She loved going in the sea, had no fear and was not fazed by the cold. She kept saying I need to go back in the swimming pool when we tried to get her out. Another water baby in our family. I am hoping now for a long hot summer and lots of slow days by the sea. Lots of space to breathe and be and remember our baby Tilda. Our #matildamae x

Sissinghurst Castle Gardens

View this post on Instagram

Today we went on a joy hunt inspired by the book Joy. It is a beautiful book that tells how a little girl tries to capture joy for her Granny who is feeling sad. Today I beat my anxiety to take my little ones out on my own for the first time in as long as I can remember. Just me and them. And do you know what I am so so glad that I did because we had a lovely time exploring the gardens at Sissinghurst Castle. We walked among the daffodils and the snowdrops, we looked up at the beautiful magnolia trees and we just walked and talked together. We found bugs, blossom, a very friendly robin, some of the cutest lambs I have ever seen. It was just a joyous day helped enormously by the glorious sunshine and the very lovely @nationaltrust staff. We will definitely be returning to the castle gardens and making more of our national trust membership. We are so incredibly lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the country. Time for me to be brave, get out more and explore. The book Joy was sent to us by the publisher for review #gifted @quartokids

Such a lovely afternoon at the farm with Edie yesterday and SO many compliments about her dress from @welovefrugi We talked to the chickens, sang to the rabbits, stroked the goats, cuddled the guinea pigs and danced with the butterflies. We had a bumpy ride on the big red trailer and enjoyed some farm themed storytelling in the shade. We love Rare Breeds. We have a different day out there every time we go. With farm animals, butterflies, a reptile house, aviary, several different play areas, meadows and woodland, sand and water play, soft play and good coffee. It has something for everyone. We will be back again next week with the big kids and some of our favourite giant stories. Do you know why?

If you are looking for a fun day out this summer we highly recommend @rarebreedscentre There is so much to do for children of all ages. We always start with a drink in the cafe and a play in the sand. We then head to the barn to meet the animals before walking round the animal enclosures. We always go into the reptile house to see the animals there and to wash our hands. We then usually walk through the woods to find the giant’s pencils, the giant snake and the giant’s chairs. At the chairs we often have our lunch before walking through the wildflower meadow on our way to the obstacle course at the mysterious marsh. We then have a play at the play areas before heading to the gardens for a snack and to see the butterfly tunnel. We often end our day with a tractor ride and an ice cream. Such a wonderful way to spend a day. So much to see and so. So much to learn and #somanywaystoplay

This weekend we returned to @rarebreedscentre for the first time in half a year. It was very exciting to be back and to see all the changes that have been made and are in progress. New signs around the farm are bright and colourful and direct visitors to some of the hidden magic in the woodland. We noticed that the giants’ chairs have gone and hope they will be coming back? The children love all the extra play tunnels, the great tyre snake or basilisk for Esther! We loved the improved challenges in the mysterious marsh and hope that the music area will be getting a revamp as it is a bit tired and in need of some love. We are so looking forward to the carpet of bluebells erupting in the coming weeks and exploring all the farm and woodland have to offer. This weekend we renewed our annual membership @rarebreedscentre We love it at Rare Breeds. There is so much to do there, so much to see and the staff are always amazing with the children. In 2016 we spent most of our summer on the farm while work was being done on our house. This spring and summer we plan to do the same thing again. We plan to do lots of our science work at Rare Breeds looking at the different plants and animals there, learning about lifecycles and habitats and more. It is such a wonderful place to spend time with young children. We are looking forward to lambing season and the opening of the butterfly tunnel. We are also looking forward to bug hunts and bluebells in the woods. This is our happy place, a safe place #somanywaystoplay

Penshurst Place

View this post on Instagram

We had a wonderful day today @penshurstplace in #kent We went with a group of #homeed families to be part of the Elizabethan / Armada experience day. We attended 7 short workshops. First me met Queen Elizabeth I herself and she was wonderful! She taught us how to spot a good husband, how to show our reverence and why every lady should have a fan! She told Esther that her dress was ‘sumptuous’ which made Esther’s day. We went on to meet a maid who told us all about the fashion of the time. The children tried on different hats and had to identify if they belonged to someone rich or poor. We met a scullery maid who taught us about food, the slightly terrifying Barber Surgeon, a suspected witch taught us about crime and punishment, a soldier talked to us about weapons used to fight The Armada and we laughed as we learned a circle dance that kept getting faster and faster. Throughout the day we learned the origins of many phrases and sayings we still use today. So many highlights from a brilliant day of living history led by @aardvarkproductions The children had a fantastic time, we all learned so much and have been introduced to a beautiful place in Kent that we are all keen to return to and explore. A wonderful #homeeducation day! #invitationtolearn #livinghistory #tonbridge #bidborough #penshurst #penshurstplace #kenthistory #thearmada #elizabethantimes #history #homeeducationuk #homeschool #edspireedventures #edspiretravels @visitkent #daysoutwithkids #daysoutinkent #littleexplorers #letthemexplore
