Autumn Flower Fairies Nature Art

View this post on Instagram

Esther and Bea both love flower fairies. We have a few of the old books including the autumn one. We decided to make our own fairy collages and elf hairstyles using petals and leaves from the garden. Edie had a good go too. She loves cutting and sticking so this was a great activity for her. The photos do not do the finished pictures justice. We are going to do this again next time we go to @rarebreedscentre and @lovebedgebury using our finds from the forest floor. The flower fairy poems are beautiful but the language is quite old. We are going to have a go at writing more modern descriptions of some of the autumn fairies. This is what is wonderful about home education, following the children’s interests, living their fairytale x

Bookish Play: Fletcher and the Falling Leaves

View this post on Instagram

Have you read Fletcher and the Falling Leaves. It is such a lovely story about a baby fox cub who has a favourite tree and is worried that it is sick as it’s leaves start to change colour and fall off. The little fox wants to help the tree and cannot understand why no one else is worried or alarmed. This is a heartwarming illustration of seasonal changes seen through the eyes of a child. #autumn #aweandwonder #savourtheseason #weloveautumnbooks #autumntrees #autumnleaves #weloveautumnplay #weloveautumnplay2019 #trayfortheday #bookishplay #bookbasedplay #bookinspiredplay #playfullearning #invitationtoread #invitationtoplay #sensorystorytime #sensorystorytelling #seasonaltales #woodentoys @harpercollinsuk @tenderleaftoys @threadbear.design @holztiger_uk @janod.uk #play #readandplay

Bookish Play: The Enormous Potato

View this post on Instagram

Edie is absolutely obsessed with this book, The Enormous Potato. It is based on The Enormous / Gigantic Turnip. In this story the farmer is helped by his wife, his daughter, their dog, their cat and a mouse. They all then wash the potato, chop the potato, salt and butter the potato and then, of course, eat the potato. I have set up this super simple #bookishplay so that Edie can act out the story. I cannot wait to hear her storytelling. She is really good at it … for a two year old! #bookstagram #childrensbooks #bookbasedplay #bookinspiredplay #traditionaltales #storytelling #readchatplay #invitationtoplay #invitationtoread #sensorystorytime #sensorystorytelling #weloveautumnplay #weloveautumnplay2019 #weloveautumnbooks #theenormouspotato #bookish #picturebook #picturebooks #booksforchildren

Apple Tasting

Conkers and Playdough

View this post on Instagram

Today we made some autumn playdough using a non cook recipe from @imaginationtree We added vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon. It smelt wonderful! We used the playdough with some of our many many conkers. We made lots of conker snails, spiders and other autumn creatures. We used acrylic pens to draw on the conkers. Esther, Bea, Edie and I had a wonderful time playing with the dough. We made some super cute hedgehogs and tried to build tall conker towers. We also made leaf prints in the scented dough. #somanywaystoplay #playdough #playdoughfun #sensoryplay #weloveautumnplay #weloveautumnplay2019 #invitationtoplay #invitationtocreate #autumnplay #conkerseason #conkerplay #conkersnails #conkers #eyfsideas #earlyyearsideas #preschoolplay #homeeducationuk #homeeducation

Bookish Play: Harvest Vegetables

View this post on Instagram

Edie and I have had a fine old time with some seasonal vegetables this week. We painted them, painted with them, washed them, gave them a bath, dried them and then chopped them up. As we cut them we had a good look at their insides and smelt them too. Edie thought that the parsnip smelled yummy and the turnip smelt yucky. Edie was surprised that the sweet potato was bright orange inside. This was a lovely activity and we talked about vegetables and how they grow and we talked about farms and harvest. This was a lovely little toddler sensory playtime with some slightly gone off veg! #harvesttime #harvestfestival #autumn #savourtheseason #weloveautumnplay #weloveautumnplay2019 #autumnplay #sensoryplay #sensoryplaytime #toddlerfun #toddlerplay #preschoolplay #playfullearning #messyplay

Bookish Play: Hedgehugs

View this post on Instagram

Do you have a favourite autumn animal? Ours is definitely the hedgehog. 🦔 We have lots of lovely stories about hedgehogs and one of lif favourites is Hedgehugs by Lucy Tapper and Steve Wilson. Horace and Hattie are the very best of friends. They do everything together but there is one thing they cannot do … hug. They are just too spiky! The book tells the tale of how the two friends solve their cuddle conundrum. The children made some lovely scratch art hedgehogs using a kit from @bakerrossltd and we recreated scenes from the story. This was a lovely activity for a rainy afternoon. As the children scratched I read aloud the story. Do you have a favourite hedgehog story? #weloveautumnplay2019 #autumnbooks #hedgehogs #hedgehugs #childrensbooks #childrensbookstagram #kidsbookstagram #kidsbookswelove #bookishplay #bookinspiredplay #bookbasedplay #readalongplayalong #bookish #weloveautumnbooks #picturebooks @maverick_books

Bookish Play: Hedgehog Conkers

View this post on Instagram

This week I am starting to work on number bonds to 10 with Bea. As it is autumn and she is loving hedgehog tales Esther and I have made ten conker hedgehogs for her to use in her maths lessons this week. We will use them to see how many different ways we can make the numbers 5 to 10. I am also going to use the little hedgehogs with Edie to work on her one to one correspondence when counting. She can recite numbers to 20 but her counting can be a little haphazard. I think these cute little hodgehegs will help and staring our counting games with some hedgehog songs and stories. We used acrylic pens to draw on our conkers to make these cute little counting creatures. #somanywaystoplay #playandlearn #playfullearning #learningthroughplay #eyfsmaths #earlymaths #countingskills #numberbonds #numberbondsto10 #earlyyearsideas #autumnplay #weloveautumnplay #weloveautumnplay2019👈 #weloveautumnplay2019 #bookishplay #bookishmaths #bookbasedplay #playfulmaths #childrensbooks #picturebooks #childrensbookstagram #hedgehogs #conkers #playfulmaths

Phonic the Hedgehog

Hedgehogs and Hibernation Small World Play

View this post on Instagram

We are learning about hedgehogs and hibernation this week. I have setup this book inspired small world play for Edie and Bea to retell two of our favourite stories. It Was A Cold Dark Night by @timhopgood tells the story of Ned the hedgehog looking for a place to sleep for winter. He finds rabbits in their burrow, foxes in their den, bats in the barn and owls nesting in the trees. The bat tells Ned to look down where he sees a lovely crunchy pile of leaves to sleep in for the winter. In Wide Awake Hedgehog our prickly friend does not want to go to sleep. All the other animals are too busy to play, squirrel is collecting nuts, dormouse is making a nest. The North Wind plays with the little hedgehog and wears him out so he is ready to settle down and sleep all winter. These two books are just perfect for introducing the idea of hibernation to very young children and this bookish play set up lets them explore further. Edie loves me to read out the story while she plays. She makes the animals move and interact and is very good at doing their voices. We have used some fabric autumn leaves, a selection of wooden animals and trees to create this woodland setting. We will add to it throughout the week I think with natural autumn treasures we finds while out on our adventures. Happy Monday! What will you be playing today?

Bookish Play: Squirrel’s Autumn Search

View this post on Instagram

Squirrel’s Autumn Search is an old favourite here. A lovely tale for the season and fits well with our Hibernation topic. I have paired the book with a classic That’s Not My from @usborne_books and this stacking game from @janod.uk The Squirrel can stand firmly on the ground or for an extra challenge balance on the wooden rocker. You then have to stack as many acorns as you can without them falling off. Great for developing patience, problem solving, collaborative working and fine motor skills. We use the acorns all the time for maths work and to add to small world play. Although perfect for autumn the Janod Squirrel Stacker would also make a great Christmas gift for a toddler or preschool aged child #somanywaystoplay

Super Simple Halloween Stacking

Bookish Play: Room on the Broom

View this post on Instagram

Room on the Broom Treasure Hunt Tray. I have created a treasure hunt in a tray for Bea and Edie tomorrow. They have a list of items to find that I have hidden in a tray of @lidlgb Halloween pasta. There is a cat and a dog, a bird and a frog, a broom, a wand, two stars, a toadstool, an owl and more. After reading the story they will search the tray to see how many of the items they can find. They can then take turns hiding and seeking. You can also use this tray to play a memory game where the children have to remember all the things on the tray and then recognise which item I remove. Kim’s game I think that is called? There are lots of ways to play with this book inspired #trayfortheday #somanywaystoplay #roomonthebroom #bookish #bookishplay #bookbasedplay #bookinspiredplay #readchatplay #sensorystorytime #sensorystorytelling #eyfsideas #invitationtoreadandplay #welovehalloweenplay #halloweenplay #weloveautumnplay2019 #weloveautumnplay #welovehalloweenplay2019 #childrensbooks #kidsbooks #kidsbookstagram #picturebooks
