I have been talking to my children a lot recently
About saving our beautiful planet
We have been learning about the effects of climate change around the globe
And what we can do as a family to play our part
We have been watching David Attenborough
And reading children’s books with real and important messages
About saving the seas, conservation and protection of planet Earth
We are ready and willing to take action
And to help make a small difference
Because if we all make our small difference
It might just become a big difference
It has to be worth a try
We have been making some small changes to our daily routine
To our home
Our weekly shop
Little swaps that contribute to the change that is needed to
Save the World
Here are 10 things you can do at home
To make your house more eco friendly
To make your home a green house
A little greener at least
DON’T WASTE WATER!
We have a water meter in our home
So we know how much water we are using
When we renovated three years ago
We had a rainwater tank installed
So our toilets flush with rain water
And we wash our clothes with rain water
Our children bath and shower together
And we encourage them not to leave taps running
When washing hands and cleaning teeth
I try not to over fill the kettle
And only boil the water needed
The water we use in our play is rain water
We try very hard in our home not to waste water
MONITOR WITH A METER
We have a smart meter
To measure how much electricity we use
William LOVES to see the numbers
And he likes to try and beat our score from one day to the next
Having a meter helps us all to remember to do things like
Turn off the lights
Unplug chargers
Turn off the TV
Wash clothes at a lower temperature
With a central meter we can all monitor
We are all able to do our bit
And see clearly how the things we do make a difference
UPDATE YOUR BOILER
When we extended and updated our home
We made the decision to invest in a new boiler
Our new boiler is more efficient
And has played large role in making our house
A greener home
DOUBLE GLAZE YOUR WINDOWS
One of the first things we did when we bought our 1930s house
Was to double glaze the windows
It was evident immediately what a difference it made
How much easier it became to heat our home and keep us all warm
INSULATION
We have insulated our attic space / roof
David also uses insulating tape around doors
Keeping heat in and cold out
Helps our home run more efficiently
And so more environmentally friendly
SHOP SMART
The children and I recently attended a Helping Habitats Workshop
With The Big Cat Sanctuary
They taught us all about shopping smartly
Buying products that have been sustainably sourced
Esther and William love to look for the logos now in shops
They are my regulators
Only allowing me to buy the correctly labelled products
CLEVER COMPOST
We are terrible at wasting food
It is something I feel very guilty about
But we do try to compost as much as we can
Using the council food bin collection
And our own compost heap in the garden
CLEAN NATURALLY
The lovely Sian at Quite Frankly She Said
Is a real champion of the clean clean
Promoting natural cleaning products that really work
This is the next change that I want to make
On our journey to making our home a green house
BUY LESS STUFF
This is my biggest downfall
I am a collector and hoarder of stuff
I am going to challenge myself to buy less
Reuse what we have
And become a more minimalist family
We do not use half off what we have
My plan is to donate much off it to families in need
And to local schools and children’s groups
I have already donated lots of our clothing
But there is much more we can do as a family in this area
RECYCLE RECYCLE RECYCLE
Recycling is about so much more than sorting your rubbish
It is about upcycling and reusing things in your home
Handing down clothes and toys
Repurposing belongings
We can all do more in this area
This is going to be another area of focus for our family
As we make our house a greener home
What are you doing with your family
To make your home a green house?
