10 Songs I recorded to VHS in The 80s

1987

The year we got Sky TV

The first year I remember

Spending hours and hours recording music

From TV to VHS

The Chart Show

Top of the Pops

MTV

VH1

I was a huge pop fan at this time

Loved buying vinyl

Watching music videos

Listening to cassettes on my Sony Walkman

And I spent more time than I care to admit

Singing into a microphone in my bedroom

And recording myself singing my favourite songs

Live to tape on my Hi Fi

Those were the days

Tween to teen days

Coming of age

A life punctuated by music of all kinds

Here is a handful of the songs I remember

Listening to

Watching

Recording

Over and over again

How I wanted to be some of these girls

Tiffany in her fluffy jumper and light blue jeans

Beautiful Vanessa Paradis

I knew all the words to every song

Kylie was my favourite

I adored her

From Charlene in Neighbours

Through all her albums

Which I have owned

On vinyl, cassette, CD, DVD

I was obsessed with her for the longest time

My cousin and I used to spend Sunday afternoons

At my Nan’s house

Acting out Kylie and Jason music videos in the conservatory

My sister and I shared a love for Belinda Carlisle

And because this was a time long before lyrics websites

I used to spend a lot of time writing out lyrics

When not singing the wrong ones

It was a long time before I realised

The Harder I Try was not

I go out jogging!

If you are a lady or gentleman of a certain age

I do hope these songs bring back warm and fuzzy memories for you

As they do for me

Enjoy!

  1. I remember having my finger poised on the pause and record buttons, recording favourite songs from the charts every Sunday evening onto cassette.
Love all those songs above. They remind me so much of school discos in my first couple of years at secondary.

I think I still sing the wrong lyrics sometimes! Unless lyrics were included in Smash Hits magazine. Used to love the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party too.
