So here am I
40 years of age
Pregnant with baby number 5
I am approaching 24 weeks
And am trying to be mindful about what I eat
I seem to go off fruit in pregnancy
I manage the odd Granny Smith apple
And bananas and tangerines
But most of my goodness comes from salad and veg
So I try to ensure I am getting enough of them
And also a variety
Whilst pregnant with Matilda Mae
I wrote a post about my pregnancy diet
So I thought it would be good to write one again
To see how I have changed
How my diet has changed between my third baby
And my fifth
As well as talking about what I eat
I am going to share ideas of what you could and should eat
Throughout pregnancy
I am treating myself as a special case
Old lady
Fifth baby
AND still nursing baby 4!
I need to eat as well as I can
But I have a very sweet tooth
And I do love a chocolatey treat
But I do try to eat well
For me and my babies
Breakfast
Breakfast is the first meal of the day
Though often in our house it is later in the morning
So we start the day with some fruit
And perhaps a breakfast biscuit or a cereal bar
I also have a cup of tea and a pint of sugar free Vimto
For breakfast I usually have a bowl of Cheerios
With semi-skimmed milk
But also love Alphabites
And sometimes have Bran Flakes
When I feel the need!
Here are some ideas
From Tommy’s
Snacks
Come mid morning
11ish
It is time for a snack
I am rubbish at snacking
My children will have a variety of fruit
Perhaps some crackers
I will have Malt Loaf spread with butter
A bag of Frazzles
Or more breakfast biscuits
And/or a cereal bar
I have also just discovered Bounce Balls
Which are very yummy!
Suggested snacks for pregnancy include
Apple slices with peanut butter
Chunks of cheese with satsuma
Houmous and carrots
2 slices of wholegrain toast
There are lots of lovely ideas online
For quick and easy healthy snacks
I must try and snack better!
Lunch
I am a bit addicted to toasted sandwiches at the moment
Mine tend to have ham, spring onions and ketchup in them
I know I should probably swap the sauce for some cheese
In my first trimester I went through a phase of eating soup
Particularly Heinz
Especially tins of chicken and mushroom
When I was pregnant with Esther and William
I used to eat lots of crumpets and tuna
I cannot imagine eating that now
It is funny how things change
Dinner
Dinner is definitely our best
And most healthy meal of the day
Our dinners include
Chicken fajitas
Vegetarian fajitas
Prawn stir fry
Salmon, brown rice and salad
Cottage Pie
Lasagne and salad
Chilli beef tacos
With the fajitas, tacos and stir fries
We pack them full of veg
Spinach for iron
Mushrooms for vitamin D
Peppers
Chillies
Red onion
Spring onions
Celery
Tomatoes, yellow and red
For salads I always choose
Rocket, Spinach and Watercress
I do look forward to our dinners
From time to time
We go through phases of eating jacket potatoes
Mostly with tuna and cheese
And David makes a mean toad in the hole
But they do not feature regularly in our rotation
We do have pizza quite a lot
But always pimp them up
With extra veg
Or eat with a bowl of salad on the side
I do try to be good
And eat well
Sugar is my downfall
And I know that that is bad
But I do attempt to balance the naughtiness
With goodness
Pregnant or not
What are your healthy food hits through pregnancy?
And what are your tastiest, naughtiest treats?
ps – If you would like to see what pregnant me was eating in 2011
The post is here
I am definitely struggling with healthy eating at the moment, I just seem constantly hungry, 11am, 4/5pm and 8pm seem to be my worst times for snacking, and the boxes of Christmas biscuits we still have as were given as gifts are far too tempting!
I find a lot of fruit gives me a bit of acid re-flux in pregnancy so do find veg sits better, so have been having more salads and veg with dips. As I have a VERY sugary tooth I thought I’d better make something more healthy, I came across some healthy bites (actually on instagram on Selasi from back off’s timeline) which is basically, cranberries, dates, cashews, almonds, coconut and coconut oil blended up. This have been great for the school runs as I don’t always have time for a full breakfast before leaving at 8am. x
