Wizard Outings: Why Take a Puppet on a Day Trip?

Over the last few months

We have been testing some puppets

From Puppets By Post

We adore puppets in our house

We have lots of them

And use them for many different things

Puppets are amazing play things

But they are also terrific tools for education

And for communication and encouraging interaction

I chose to review a wizard finger puppet

With a friendly face that makes me think of Dumbledore

Traditional wizard grey locks and beard

And a rich purple velvet cloak

This wizarding figure is soft and cuddly

And definitely looks capable of magical things

wizardy

He has fast become a favourite

And is popped into Bea’s change bag

Whenever we go out

Taking a puppet on day trips

Can be lots of fun

My children love to photograph Wizard

In lots of different places

explorer

They show him things

Like he is one of them

Or like a new friend

They take turns to play puppeteer

To act his movements

And speak his voice

home

Bea likes to carry him and cuddle him

And chew him too!

Puppets are great companions for little people

They will very soon talk to them

And through them

Giving parents and carers a way to communicate

If that is something that can be hard to do

friend

Esther likes to take Wizard with her on special days

He helped to calm her nerves

At one of her first ballet classes

nerves

William likes to blame a puppet

For things he might not want to admit himself too

Puppets are playful

And used in the right way can be powerful too

Magical even

magical

Puppets grab children’s attention very quickly

They are great for breaking the rhythm of a toddler tantrum

Believe me I know!

Puppets can model good choices

Trying vegetables at dinner time

Cleaning their teeth without fuss

Helping to tidy the playroom

voice

Puppets can get away with asking the questions

That mummy and daddy, or teacher, might not

Puppets can be good listeners

And can be left in a special place

Where children can go to find them and talk

Finger puppets are great

For young children

They can be easily manipulated

They can be cuddled

They can be kept close and carried around

As they are small and not heavy

Finger puppets are great for storytelling

And modelling interaction

Conversation

interaction

Puppets can be used to develop children’s language skills

And to promote imaginative play

A puppet is so much more than a puppet

It offers so much more than play
