This summer we will be watching the Olympic Games
We are not watching it live as we do not have live TV in our home
But we are going to watch highlights
We are going to watch clips from the opening ceremony
We are going to talk about different countries and cultures
We are going to find places on maps
Learn about capital cities and national flags
We are going to watch clips from the sports that we like
Esther and William are gymnastic crazy at the moment
Forever forward rolling and trying to perfect their cartwheels
I also want Esther to see the horse riding
So she knows what she is trying to learn to do in her lessons
I am hoping that they might enjoy the diving as much as I do
We have watched some cycling already
And seen the competitors be fast and brave like Uncle Si
I want them to see the running races
And some of the track and field events that they tried themselves
At Home Ed Sports Day
I want them to discover new sports
And experience new things
I want them to feel anticipation and excitement
I want them to witness passion, commitment, bravery, fear
I want them to look at team work, camaraderie
I want them to feel pride
I want them to feel awe and wonder
To be inspired
I have strong memories of watching
From childhood through my teenage years and into adulthood
Key sporting events punctuate my life
I am not a sporty person
I enjoyed athletics at school
But was not really very good at it
But I love watching sport
And the values of sportsmanship
Have helped me in my life
As I followed my own path
It is not really an interest in sport
I am hoping my children will develop
But an interest in people
An understanding of how though we are all different
In many ways we are all the same
I am also hoping that they will begin to understand
That if you want something enough
And you are willing to work hard for it
Then nothing and no one can stand in your way
I hope the Olympics and Olympians
Might encourage my children to reach for the stars
Follow the rainbows
And work hard to reach their goals
And live their dreams
The Olympics is about so much more than sport
As a home educating mummy
I am going to make the most of the next two weeks
And Twinkl has made some great resources to help me
That can help you too
Use these posters to look at Olympic symbols and discuss their meanings
Learn the history of the Olympic rings
Learn about the host country, Brazil
Look at the Olympics and Paralympics values, discuss what each one means
How they might be shown during the events
And how we might show them in our lives
Learn about the history of the Olympics
There is so much to see, learn and do this summer
Inspired by the Olympics
You could even have your own Olympics party
With fun sporting events
I am collecting some ideas on Pinterest
I want to make our Olympic learning this summer
Memorable, valuable and fun
I want to encourage my children
To take part and take pride
I want to share stories with them
About how these sports people started
Just like them
Children in a swimming lesson
At a gymnastics club
I want them to know how hard they worked
How often, how early, how hard they trained
I want to talk about sacrifice
Perseverance
Determination
Dedication
Competition
Celebration
Disappointment
Empathy
This summer we will be watching the Olympic Games
There are many thing we will talk about, think about, learn
But mostly we will be doing it together
Sitting, snacking
Ooohing, aahing
Cheering and clapping
On the edge and leaping out of our seats
Holding hands
Together
And I hope that above all else
My little people will remember that
This summer we will be watching the Olympic Games
Will you?
We have free Twinkl membership in return for mentions on my blog and social media throughout the year
Love this! We’re doing the same. Like you, I’m not that sporty but I love the idea that they could inspire the boys. I have no idea what they’ll like and enjoy so we’ll be trying different things. Twinkl definitely has some great resources for it!
Don’t forget the sailing, Jennie… so they know where the Enterprise might lead them.
Oooh yes, we love sailing! We do not do it often enough x
We’re doing just the same.
I love this! I was watching swimming with my 2 year old last night and she was so into it, asking questions and getting super excited once the races started. I think I can copy some of your ideas and use the Olympics as a teaching tool 🙂
Gah why do your posts always make me cry! Totally agree, the value of being “sporting” is difficult to teach but very important to learn. Thanks for the Twinkl mention also.
