At the moment our house is a wreck
More of it seems to have been torn down
Than has been left standing
But in the coming days it will be rebuilt
And in the coming weeks we will start to make a plan
For moving back in
Every day decisions are made about the renovation
And in this respect we are very lucky
We can ensure safety in our home from the start
Already we are planning power sockets
Selecting switches
Organising cupboard openings
Making choices that will ensure our house
Is a safe and secure family home
We have never really baby proofed our home before
We have kept the children with us in one area
Confined to safe spaces
But once we have one big, open plan setting
We are going to need to be much more safety conscious
Particularly with our new kitchen
And a large, central wood burning stove
We need to be thinking now
About keeping our children
Safe
And allowing our children
The freedom to roam
Their home
Our home
And so we are babyproofing
Toddler and childproofing our home
For example
Our new kitchen does not have many wall units
The children will be able to open all the cupboards and drawers
We will be getting locks to prevent little ones
Being able to discover and explore any harmful products
We have chosen rounded corners in our kitchen
To minimise bumps to heads
We will be installing fire alarms
And carbon monoxide monitors
In our home
And ensuring they are switched on
And checked regularly
We will be having
Already do have
Windows that can be locked
And special safety glass
In any larger windows or doors
Any large items of furniture
Anything that could be pulled over
We attach to the wall
This is something we have always done for peace of mind
And though we are now beyond needing a stair gate
We will probably use something similar to wrap around the fire
There is so much to think about
When creating a safe haven for your family
What is your top baby or toddler proofing tip?
This is a collaborative post
I think my best toddler-proofing tip is to have some cupboards that they can open and pull stuff out of. Even better if it’s a cupboard where they can get their own plates, cups etc. Sadly our 2-year-old has mastered the Ikea cupboard locks and discovered a taste for brown sugar eaten straight from the packet!
Ah yes x I like the idea of Bea having a cupboard she is free to explore.
