Esther and William are at an age when they like monsters
They like to be scared
Just a little
They love bears under the stairs
And are always chasing imaginary creatures around the garden
We have not yet watched many monsters on TV
But I know the time is coming
When we might watch some of the many monsters on TV
There have been some pretty ugly, stinky, hairy, misshapen, one-eyed, funky-coloured monsters on our TV screens over the years, but which of them scores highest on the grotesque-o-meter?
Here are ten of the best!
1.Godzilla
First on the list has to be King of the Monsters, Godzilla. Originating from a series of Tokusatsu films of the same name from Japan, Godzilla is a both a protector and a destructor but is mostly renowned for his sheer size and power.
2.Count Dracula
This blood-sucking villain was first introduced to us by Bram Stocker in 1897 and has since become one of the most famous vampires of all time. He’ll do anything for a glug of the red stuff and has even inspired the next generation of creepy pop-culture with Draculaura featuring on these cool Monster High T-shirts.
3.Frankenstein’s Monster
Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein is a pretty intense read, but put Frankenstein’s Monster on TV and you’ve the making of nightmares. He’s a science experiment gone wrong and a sight for sore eyes, so don’t watch anything to do with this gothic tale before bedtime.
4.Herman Munster
Who could forget The Munsters? It’s unique, quirky and funny but boy you wouldn’t want to bump into Herman on a night out. As the patriarch of the Munster family he’s actually a pretty decent guy but take one look at him and he’s sure to have you running for the hills.
5.The Incredible Hulk
With superhuman strength and great invulnerability, The Incredible Hulk is one of Marvel’s most infamous superheroes. The alter ego of socially withdrawn physicist, Bruce Banner, Hulk is a legend in his own right, but only appears when Banner gets stressed or mad.
6.Gizmo
Can monsters be cute? Sure they can! Just take a look at Gizmo from the hit film Gremlins. With his friendly face, big ears and goggle eyes you just want to give him a big hug and he’ll surely be very grateful for one. Just don’t feed him after midnight!
7.Harry
What would the 90s have been without Harry and the Hendersons, a lovable TV series about a family who adopt a real-life Big Foot? Kind, loving and with the best smile on TV, Harry was certainly not scary but the main problem was – he was impossible to hide.
8.Krumm
Remember Krumm? He was the stinky, eye-juggling monster who appeared in the nineties American TV series Aaahh!!! Real Monsters! Not only did he use his stench to scare people away but he carried his eye balls in his hands making him a top TV star.
9.Angel
The brooding (and very handsome) vampire from hit 90s TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer makes the list because while many of us continue to lament over Buffy and Angel never working out he also harboured a dark side, which made Season 2 of the series a terrifying, plot twisting feat.
10.Daleks
The great thing about Doctor Who is that almost anything goes. The weirder the better, which is what makes this show one in a kind. Take the Daleks for instance, they’re a fictional extra-terrestrial race of mutants created by a megalomaniacal scientist and are just one some of the strange Doctor Who monsters which make the show a success.
So there you have it, ten of the best monsters that have appeared on our screens now try not to think about them before you go to sleep later tonight.
