Naming Our Rainbow

Esther is now the 156th most popular girls name in the UK

It was not in the 100s when we chose it in 2010

Matilda is now the 47th most popular girls name in the UK

It has been around this position for a few years now but was a name we, I, loved from the start

William has always been popular too, 9th in the UK rankings this year

William was a family name

There was never any doubt what William would be

Esther we going to be Matilda

But she is an Esther through and through

There will only ever be one Matilda

One Matilda Mae

Our Baby Tilda

And how she suited her name!

And now we are growing a rainbow

A baby that needs a name

Matilda Mae was Matilda from the start

I publicly named the bump

And am so glad I did

It seemed to make the most of the very little precious time we had

I call our current bump Meredith Hope

But David is unsure of the name

And he also wants to keep the name a secret this time

Until our daughter is here

And so we are collecting possible names

Names that suit a rainbow

Baby sister to feisty twins

Baby sister to an angel

Esther’s name means Star and so when we chose Matilda’s middle name we wanted a link

Mae means Star of the Sea

Matilda was linked to William through it’s German origins and the meaning

Mighty in Battle

I would like this baby’s names to have links and meaning too

Right now though they are just a list

A long list to be made into a short list

After research and consideration

What could the perfect name for our Rainbow Baby be?

Iris, meaning Rainbow

Seren, meaning Star

Edie or Edith, meaning Prosperous in Battle

Nell, means Shining Light

Nora, meaning Light

Phoebe, meaning Radiant, Shining One

It is quite hard to choose a name

When to me she will always be Meredith Hope

Baby Merry

But I do like Edie too

And the meaning if Iris I love

I quite like Nell and Nora

And Seren is a name I have always loved

Phoebe was a possibilty for Esther too

And Naomi, come to that

Thankfully we have time

And we are open to suggestions?

What would your perfect name for a rainbow baby be?

Do you have a favourite name for a girl?

What names would you suggest go well with Esther and William

And Tilda too?

Can you help us name our rainbow?

  1. I have always found choosing names very hard. Baz chose Finley’s name. He gets the boy names, I get the girl names! I chose Toni-Joi. I chose Toni when I was very young as a girls name I liked. Luckily we both liked it. Joy is my Mums middle name, Gran’s name and was my favourite Nana’s name. I am really pleased that her name has Joy in it, as it has proved a self fulfilling prophecy. She loves when we read a book and it says something like dancing for Joy, and she says “me I’m Joy”.

Your name choices are lovely. Can’t wait to see what you decide when you name her by sharing a photo of you holding her happy and healthy in your arms

  2. Lovely names…. Seren is beautiful… I don’t think we came across that one whilst we were looking. We only settled on a name a couple of weeks ago! I hope they suit it 🙂

    Enjoy your search xxxx

  3. Names are so difficult to choose.

    I love the name Hope!

Meredith is lovely too, though it makes me think of Greys Anatomy. 😉

We loved the names Adriana (Lady of the Sea)
and Ilona (pronounced il-loh-nah It is of Hungarian and Greek origin, and the meaning of Ilona is “light”. Variant of Helen. Also carries the connotation of “beautiful”, because of the beauty of Helen of Troy.

  4. Personally I love Meredith Hope and think it works well with the other three names but I agree, the name Iris has a beautiful meaning – very poignant. Good luck xx

  5. We have a daughter called Eadie Mae. We love her name and it always gets lovely compliments. She is three now and I am yet to meet another Eadie. A middle name we nearly chose to go with Eadie was Grace, which means Gods Favour or Gift.

  6. Oh Jennie – how similar we are. When I was expecting Evan these were our girl choices:
    Seren
    Esme
    Edie
    Maya
    Phoebe
    Emma

I absolutely love Seren and I think had Evan been a girl he would have been Edie Seren. You are so right – picking a name is so hard. I love all of your choices xxx

  7. I like this name and meaning, http://nameberry.com/babyname/Beatrice “she who brings happiness”
In Italian the meaning of the name Beatrice is: Blesses.
In Gaelic the meaning of the name Beatrice is: Bringer of joy; blesses.
in Dante’s great poem The Divine Comedy, Beatrice is his guide through Paradise and is idealized as the embodiment of the spirit of love. In Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, Beatrice is the witty, high-spirited heroine.
I also like http://www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/0/Halia which means “In remembrance of a loved one”, not so keen on Rosemary which is for remembrance in the language of flowers.
You may find a name this way, but as you discovered with Esther, sometimes they name themselves despite your best efforts!

  8. My rainbows are William (always known as Freddie) and Ophelia, who as you will have noticed is always known as Fifi or even Foofa. I have always been drawn to Aurora as a name.

  9. Reading through your post I was going to suggest Seren then read further and you already had it there. A lot of those names were ones we considered for our girls, Iris in particular. I liked Faith but my husband didn’t so I campaigned and we now have it as a middle name. I like that you’ve got a link between them all, it’s lovely. xx

  10. my little girl now 2 is Hope … she was the moment she was conceived after IVF and I was told there was no way I’d be able to carry the pregnancy being so old (I was 47 when she was born) , I lost a baby at 3 months and my mother painted a picture at the time of forget me nots and acconites, it was called “forget me not and hope” I think the word hope and the name Hope sprang from there … her middle names are the names of 3 of her godmothers … I wanted to include them in our journey …

Meredith is a wonderful name … and Nora is gorgeous too … but maybe you’ll see her in a few months time and she’ll be someone different … I knew Hope was the name I wanted but it didn’t seem right until I saw her in person and then I knew that she was our Hope … congratulations on your rainbow x

  11. To me it is obvious that her name has to be, Merry! I think MM has sent you her to sooth your soul and bring you some joy and your first dream about rainbow was Tilda having her say in your family going forward. What about Iris Merry Hope ? If David isn’t keen. Tbh the main person who matters has gas her say! Take care what ever her name is!

  12. Darcey meaning from the bear fortress or the one with dark hair
Niamh i don’t know what it means but its a nice name
Taylor again i don’t know what it is but its nice
Harlie? I know a girl called Harlie who is really sweet

  13. I so want her to be called Merry! But Iris is one of my favourite names too. Wouldn’t really work with our surname or we would have used it 🙂

  14. My daughter is Enid which means soul.
Elspeth is my other daughter which means consecrated by God

I love Iris, Seren, Meredith. xxx

  15. I love Meredith Hope but also love Seren. It hints at Serenity as well as meaning Star. So hard to choose though, and for me, I didn’t know for sure until I saw them. Good luck choosing!
    xx

  16. I think your ideas are lovely – here are some more for you:

    Selena: sister of the sun
    Adelpha: beloved sister
    Zaara: blossoming flower/dawn
    Oriana: sunrise
    Asha: hope/life/desire
    Macy: a gift from god
Thea (German name): a gift from god
Niamh: daughter of the god of the sea

  17. All of your choices are beautiful. I also love the suggestion above of Beatrice (Bea).Meridith Hope is a wonderful name.Baby Merry! Is it the Meredith or the Hope which your husband isntsure of?

  18. I was also going to say Seren (although must admit it seems obvious that it has to be Meredith Hope!)

Eleanor (my name) means light and you can have lots of abbreviations – Elle, Nell, Nora, Ellen, Ellie etc. My daughter is Eilidh (pronounced Ay-lee) and that is a gaelic variant of my name (as I’m Scottish), which I love. I like the idea of connecting the names somehow.
    Grace is really pretty too.
Lowenna is nice, and means ‘joy’.
    Abigail means ‘father’s joy’
    Kara means ‘love’
    Celeste

Or how about a different link, so Esther is Star, Matilda is Star of the sea and then link baby three to the ‘sea’ part, so something like Rosemary (dew of the sea) and Rosie for short? Everything’s Rosie…

  19. PS) Re-reading that post, I just need to add that I meant baby girl three – as in that chain of names that I suggested. Just wanted to clarify that because of course I am very clear that you have four children and didn’t want you to think otherwise. xxxx

  20. I love Edie and Nora !! And I think Hope is a perfect middle name. My daughter Evie was also named in the womb (infact before she was even concieved) I called her by her name as soon as we knew she was a girl x

  21. Before reading the whole post I thought of the name Seren, a star connection between them all. It is a name I love and was on my list when we named Rhian, we almost named her Rhian Faith but changed it to Rhian Neve. I find choosing a name difficult, I am sure that the name that you choose will be just perfect.

  22. I think Iris or Seren would be lovely but I really love your first choice, I think it’s a beautiful name. I am rather a name nerd and choosing names for my children was one of my absolute favourite things and a lot of thought went into it. My daughter’s name is Honor because we felt so lucky to be blessed with another child.

I think a virtue middle name like Hope or Joy is perfect for your rainbow. Eve/Evelyn has a lovely meaning behind it too.

  23. All beautiful names. I like the links. I had an early miscarriage with my first and for some reason I always refer to my angel baby as Rose- not a name I had ever put on a list or considered- Esther was my favourite – when I had my little girl a year later we named her Róisín which means little rose.

  24. Might you consider Genevieve? We chose it for our daughter and have had so many compliments about it being unusual and feminine. I thought you might like it as it has 2 meanings with resonate with your situation. Firstly, it means ‘white wave’ which of course makes me think of the sea which I know is so special to you. Its second meaning is ‘woman of the people’ which I think is a bit like the strong warrior woman idea that links Matilda’s name – a sort of leader of the clan idea. I love Hope as a middle name by the way.

  25. My parents wanted a baby so badly and before I was around they had tried 3 times, 3 times ended with loss. When I stopped growing the doctors and midwives agreed it was safer for me to be born a bit early (a few weeks early) due to the history of baby loss already a huge concern for both them and my parents. I nearly died during birth and my parents still have the heart monitor reading too but they called me Helen as it means Bright or Light. It took them a while to choose a name but they saw me as a ray of light in their life after so many sad and dark days and because my eyes were bright blue.
However Iris sounds beautiful, unique and very special. But of course you both have to be happy on a name. Hope you enjoy choosing such lovely names. 🙂
