Today, with World Book Day on the horizon, I have been rotating the books in our reading corners.
Changing from a winter focus to spring.
Before I pack our winter words away I thought I would share them with you in case you fancy stocking up before next year.
Here are a selection of our winter books.
Jack Frost by Kazuno Kohara
I adore this book for it’s glorious simplicity. A simple tale of a boy playing in the frost and snow with frost personified as Jack. The pictures are clear white against blue. A wonderful winters tale of friendship. A classic for preschool children.
Elmer in the Snow by David McKee
We adore Elmer. The lovely colourful rainbow. In this story Elmer takes his friends for a walk in the snow and shows them just how much fun winter can be.
Big Bear Little Brother by Carl Norac
This is a stunning story of friendship illustrated with beautiful pencil sketches. It is a book to fall in love with. To be enjoyed over and over again, when you are feeling a little lost or lonely, sit by the fire and enjoy this book of a boy and his bear.
Foxes in the Snow by Jonathan Emmett
Esther and William adore this story about twin fox cubs who get lost in the snow. It is their first ever adventure in the snow and they think they are far from home as they do not recognise the world covered in white. But they are never far from their warm, cosy den and the love and protection of their mother.
Say Hello to the Snowy Animals by Ian Whybrow
A book introducing animals that live cold, icy habitats. A lovely way to start a winters day and a lovely way to say goodnight.
Sam’s Snowflake by Gillian Shields
Waiting for Santa and waiting for Daddy on Christmas Eve. A tale of festive excitement and anticipation and one baby bear’s love for his Daddy.
The Snowman Storybook and The Snowman and The Snowdog
Story book versions of the wonderful Raymond Briggs animated shorts.
Pooh’s Snowy Day by AA Milne
A Winnie the Pooh classic in small picture book format. The story is set on a snowy day in the Hundred Acre Wood. Pooh and Piglet decide to build Eeyore a house to keep him warm on the cold winter day.
Harry and the Snow King by Ian Whybrow
I am not a huge fan of the Harry and the Dinosaur books but like most three year olds my children love them. This is better one about waiting for snow, that first disappointing fall and then the real stuff! A great story for young children waiting for snow, with added dinosaurs!
The Snow Angel by Christine Leeson
This is a beautiful book, definitely one of my favourites. Two mice playing in the snow find a fallen angel. A snow angel. The descriptive language in this book is magical, the words like the pictures glitter and glisten from the page. The mice help their angel find food and gain strength, until she spreads her wings and is able to fly back home, leaving behind a warm drift of feathers for the mice to sleep in through the cold winter nights. A magical story of angels and kindness that holds a special place in my heart.
Stick Man by Julia Donaldson
A book that needs no introduction, one of Julia Donaldson’s best and great for getting kids outside on woodland trails even on the coldest of winter days.
The Gruffalo’s Child by Julia Donaldson
Instantly recognisable the sequel to The Gruffalo. A wonderful tale of woodland adventure told with rhyme and wit. A family favourite set in winter but enjoyed all year round.
Bella Gets Her Skates On by Ian Whybrow
Esther loves this story of a little rabbit who is scared of skating. She is unsure of lots of things but her family help her to grow in confidence. A lovely story of family togetherness. And Bella, of course, turns out to be a super skater!
Silent Night by Juliet Groom
This is a beautiful lullaby in a book. I used to sing it to Tilda. A song of love between parent and child. Sleep in heavenly peace Baby Tilda.
The Snow Lambs by Debi Gliori
In this story of lost and found a storm is brewing. A little boy’s sheepdog goes missing while rounding up the flock before the snow becomes too deep. The storm is fierce and the boy is worried about his dog, his friend. The book shows the story from the perspective of the lost dog and the sad boy who is missing his friend and refusing to give up on him. It is a wonderful story told equally through words and pictures. A page turner that explores loyalty and love and friendship. And it has a happy ending, but I won’t give that away.
Henry’s Holiday by Gillian Shields
A little baby penguin is fed up of being cold and so he decides to go on holiday to an island in the sun. He soon realises that he misses his friends and he misses home. He misses the cold.
The Polar Bear and the Snow Cloud by Jane Cabrera
A story of a young bear searching for a friend, a real friend, not one made of snow. Will he find his longed for friend?
A Flower in the Snow by Tracey Corderoy
So many of our favourite winter stories feature polar bears. This is no exception. In this story Luna and Bear are best friends. They belong together like bread and jam. They will do anything for one another. One day Luna finds a beautiful solitary flower against the snow, when the flower disappears Luna is very sad. The bear wants to make her happy again and so goes searching for a sunshine flower. While her friend is away Luna realises that the flower is not what makes her so happy but her friend. This is a beautiful story of friendship. Beautifully written and beautifully illustrated. A book to be shared over and over again.
These are some of our wintry favourites. I would love to know some of yours.
Oh, and tomorrow, you will have chance to win one of the book boxes from Tidy Books shown in the first photograph.
Have a wonderful World Book Day!
Thank you for sharing. I’m not familliar with a lot of these books but the sound great.
