Messy Play for Matilda Mae: Painting Stones

Today’s offering was not planned as messy play, not even as messy art.

It was supposed to be a time of making pretty painted stones to throw into the sea with Baby Tilda’s ashes.

It was actually a practice run but it was meant to be a calm and creative session.

And it was really.

It was calm.

It was creative.

Our friend who came round to play painted some beautiful stones with her mummy.

We used ordinary poster paints and some glitter paint from the Early Learning Centre.

I had thought about saving the stones to use as planets in our Stars and Space Sensory Play.

However, when I put the stones in water all the paint washed off.

I think for the best stone painting you need to use acrylic paints. This would make the finish much glossier too.

Esther and William were not too worried about the finish really.

They were not really that interested in painting their stones.

What they did have great fun doing was making a mess.

Of themselves.

Like this!!

William enjoyed painting himself haphazardly for a little while before going off to play trains.

But Esther …

Esther spent absolutely ages

with different colours and different brushes

Turning herself into a living piece of modern art

She was totally and utterly engrossed in what she was doing

So focused on

So dedicated to

Making a gloriously colourful sensory mess!

She was quite methodical in her work.

Painting all the way down her legs

Not forgetting the soles of her feet or the palms of her hands

All the way up her arms and even added streaks to her hair

This was modern art and messy play at it’s best

Oh to be a toddler!

She had the most wonderful time.

And I had a lovely time watching her.

And seeing her giggle and smile.

This is Esther painting Messy Me.

How have you made a mess this week?

Thank you so much to everyone who has been joining in with this linky and helping me make it through another Saturday.

This week is 11 weeks without Matilda Mae.

Thank you for being a part of her legacy.

I miss her so so much x

  1. We did stone painting before and found the same, used them in another activity and all the paint washed straight off, so I have kept them now to use for painting again on another day!

  2. I love messy art! The twins, especially Esther, look as though they do too! I have great plans for today’s messy play session… watch this space!
And just to add, I know that this week has been an incredibly hard week for you and it seems so hard to believe you have been without tilda for 11 whole weeks. I think the play you do with the twins is as much for you as them so keep it up. You are amazing

    xxx

  3. Wow! Now that’s what I call messy play. Looks like they had so much fun, especially Esther. Love how she has even painted her nappy.
I can’t believe it’s been 11 weeks. Such a little amount of time but also so many Saturdays. Thinking of you, always xx

  4. Looks like they had so much fun – Esther and the decorated nappy really is funny!
I can’t believe it’s 11 weeks today… I know you often go to Rare Breeds Centre on a Saturday and I hope the shines if you are there today xx

  5. Oh my goodness the girl certainly doesn’t mind getting messy!I saw this post on my iphone last night but it didnt do justice to the photos lik the lappy does, they are fab!
I really like the idea of painting stones as my little one loves stones, lots of love Jess x

  6. I love love love the way you’ve just let Esther get on and make a mess however she wants. So many mummies would have stopped her as soon as she started painting herself and her clothes. This is messy play at its best!

  7. The more I read about our messy play sessions the more I come to think that it is much funnier when it’s with a wet texture : paint, water, shaving foam, mud !!! I like the others too for the sensory aspect but wet means fun. Our children are going to be “super sensored up” as R. said to me the other day !

Your painting session looks great ! I want to do some painting today but I’ve almost run out of paint !!! I’m going to do some messy art in the bath I think mixing my leftovers of paint and some shaving foam…

I have a favour to ask you Jennie. I will send you a pm.

  9. Hehe good job you weren’t using acrylic paints otherwise it would have taken ages to come off! Love it! We haven’t managed any messy play this week 🙁 but will hopefully join in again next week. Have enjoyed looking at all the posts recently. Sending you love for another Saturday x

  10. I love that you suggested painting stones and Esther and William decided to paint their bodies…and yesterday I suggested painting the garage doors and my children decided to paint stones!!

  12. What great fun! You’re a lot braver than I; whenever I’ve let Jake & Ellie paint their feet I’ve found it hard to stop them walking off!

By the way: Ellie used to wear the T-shirt Esther has on; it’s funny to see it on someone else! x

  13. You are so brave! I am trying my best with the mess but I think this would be a step too far for my nerves, all credit to you! I can’t believe it’s been 11 weeks, but so proud to be part of this linky and keeping Tildas memory alive xxx
