Understanding Anger Through Books

“Anger is like flowing water; there’s nothing wrong with it as long as you let it flow. Hate is like stagnant water; anger that you denied yourself the freedom to feel, the freedom to flow; water that you gathered in one place and left to forget. Stagnant water becomes dirty, stinky, disease-ridden, poisonous, deadly; that is your hate. On flowing water travels little paper boats; paper boats of forgiveness. Allow yourself to feel anger, allow your waters to flow, along with all the paper boats of forgiveness. Be human.”
― C. JoyBell C

“Most misunderstandings in the world could be avoided if people would simply take the time to ask, “What else could this mean?”
Shannon L. Alder

“Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If, in our heart, we still cling to anything – anger, anxiety, or possessions – we cannot be free.”
Thich Nhat Hanh

“Never respond to an angry person with a fiery comeback, even if he deserves it…Don’t allow his anger to become your anger.”
Bohdi Sanders

Anger is a complex and often misunderstood emotion

It is something that we all feel

It is something that frightens many of us

If we do not know how to control it

How to react to it

Books provide a safe space to explore anger

They help us see what anger is

Where it comes from

What causes it

What happens to anger if it is ignored

What happens to anger if it is accepted

Processed, understood and let go

Books help us understand how anger can feel

How we can feel consumed by it

Over powered by it

Through books we see how emotions and feelings change

As we harness our energy and find ourselves

Not drowning but riding the waves

In charge of what we are feeling

Books can show children and their grown ups

That if we can harness our anger

If we can control it

We can make it a positive charge

We can use our feelings for good

Books show us the power in reaching out

How making meaningful connections can help us

If we can share how we feel

It can help us to accept it and deal with it

Channel it and change it

Books show us that we can start anew

These brilliant and beautiful books

Shine a light on anger

On frustration, fury and rage

These stories show how anger can be feared

How it can be faced and freed

These books help children to explore

And understand their own feelings

While also developing empathy for others

I love these books and the comfort

Support and inspiration

They offer young readers

And their grown ups

“Anger is just anger. It isn’t good. It isn’t bad. It just is. What you do with it is what matters. It’s like anything else. You can use it to build or to destroy. You just have to make the choice.”

Constructive anger,” the demon said, her voice dripping sarcasm.

Also known as passion,” I said quietly. “Passion has overthrown tyrants and freed prisoners and slaves. Passion has brought justice where there was savagery. Passion has created freedom where there was nothing but fear. Passion has helped souls rise from the ashes of their horrible lives and build something better, stronger, more beautiful.”
Jim Butcher
