Our Bookish Learning: Music

“One ought, every day at least, to hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture, and, if it were possible, to speak a few reasonable words.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

“Ah, music,” he said, wiping his eyes. “A magic beyond all we do here!”
J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

“We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams.”
Arthur William Edgar O’Shaughnessy

Music is and always has been a huge part of my life.

I was raised on 50s and 60s rock and roll, and love songs.

I was a child of the 80s, a teen of the 90s, a young adult of the noughties.

Music filled and steered every part of who I am.

As a child I played recorder, but my musicality comes through my voice.

I love to sing. I have performed in musical theatre throughout my childhood and young adulthood and I love going to the theatre as often as I can. It makes my heart sing and my soul soar that my children now love music and musical theatre too.

We listen to a wide range of music at home and especially in the car. My children love Kylie and Roxette, Oasis and Dodgy, U2 and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. They love The Beatles, Madonna, Pearl Jam and Four Non Blondes.

This year we are going to build music into our learning at home. We are going to do a weekly art and music challenge inspired by the wonderful James Mayhew and his book Once Upon A Tune, and by the Story Orchestra series. We are going to get to know the orchestra and listen to a different piece of classical music each day. We are also going to listen to a daily tune from my life soundtrack. Songs I want my children to know.

This year we are going to explore music, the possibilities and magic it brings to the everyday. We are going to listen to the stories it tells and the pictures it paints in our mind. We are going to sing together and compose our own music using traditional instruments and digital resources.

I am so excited for this part of our home education this year.

Today I am sharing some of the books we will be using in case they are useful for you in your home, library, classroom or school.

Music and stories, songs and art and books. There is nothing more wonderful than that.

THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC BOOK SELECTION
