One of the very first things that your child will be taught at school is how to read. It forms the
building blocks for everything else and will be needed across the curriculum. It may take
them a while to grasp but is something that you can help them with through regular practice
at home. Here are some top tips for teaching children to read from a group of teachers inSurrey

Getting the Basics Right
There are 26 letters in the alphabet and to be able to read, your child will need to know
the sounds that each letter makes. These are known as phonetics and are important not to
confuse with the names of the letters at this stage as it can over complicate the process.
You will need to refer to the letter “J” for example as “juh”.

Patience
As there are a number of sounds to remember, it may take your child some time before they
are able to read. It’s important that they aren’t rushed at this stage and that you are patient
so that they have the confidence to read and don’t get confused.

Capitals
Capitals are another habit that you will need to break out of when teaching your child to
read. They can look quite different to their lowercase versions and also create confusion.

Catchy Songs
If your child’s having difficulty with remembering their phonetics, there are lots of catchy
phonetics songs out there.

Story Time
Whether they know how to read or not, reading to your child can help them to build a
familiarity with the sounds and words. This can make things easier for them when they begin
to blend as they will have what's known as spoken vocabulary.

Checking Reading Material
It’s important to find something that is engaging for children but also, age appropriate. Books
that contain large words and are lengthy can be difficult to read and demotivate them to
carry out reading of their own. This is something that you can easily review as books tend to
have recommended reading ages. If you have a good understanding of where they are in
their reading, you can just flick through to determine whether a book is too hard.
