To do well at school, your child will need to put in time and effort at home. Keep on top of all
their homework and carry out independent study. It sounds simple enough but can be harder
than you think with so many distractions around. A dedicated study area can be a saving
grace, giving them space to concentrate, stay organised and motivated. Whether you have
plenty of space or the corner of a bedroom to work with, we have just the tips to help you set
up the perfect study space for your child.
Manage Noise
While your child’s doing their work, it’s important to be respectful and try to create as little
noise as possible. However, it’s not always realistic with stuff going on. If you have the
option, try setting up a study as far away from the busy parts of your home as possible.
These are typically staircases, hallways, and entry points like the front and back door. If you
don’t have much space, you can alternatively look for earplugs and other sound cancelling
devices.
Organisation
While you may not have much room to work with, it’s essential that their study space has
ample storage for their belongings and class notes. There are many multi-purpose solutions
out there and ways of creating space like floating shelves to go above their desk. This will
prevent them from going missing and create a clutter free space that they can work in
peacefully.
Comforts
Your child will likely spend a lot of time at their desk, especially in the lead up to their exams
or deadlines which is why it’s important that they have one that’s comfortable. However, you
should try to avoid adding too many “comforts” as it may make the environment a little too
relaxing and distract them from their work.
Goals
It’s important to have goals as they give us something to focus on and work towards. Having
visual reminders of these dotted around may help to boost their motivation and encourage
them to work hard.
Time Management
Children get assigned a lot of homework for the reason that it helps them to memorise what
they’ve learned in class. With so much to get done, it’s important that they manage their time
correctly. There are tools that you can add to their room to make this easier for them like a
clock/timer and board where they can keep a tally of the tasks that they have outstanding.
