Today we have been learning about Frida Kahlo
I have such admiration for this courageous woman
She had such misfortune and pain throughout her life
But she never gave in
She painted to express and process her feelings
I have a sentimental soft spot for Frida
Because her parents are called Wilhelm (my nickname for William)
And Mathilde (Matilda)
Frida painted through the pain of her illness and accident
She painted through the anger and hurt of her marriage
She painted through the pain and grief of being unable to be a mother
I have huge empathy for Frida
I write for all the reasons she painted
To get everything that is inside my heart and head out
And onto paper
The children and I have loved reading about Frida’s life
She got polio at six years old
And afterwards walked with a limp
At 18 Frida’s school bus crashed into a tram
Several people were killed in the accident
Frida nearly died
She was severely injured and spent many weeks in hospital
Her injuries meant that she could not have children
Through her life she had over 30 operations
She lived her life in a lot of pain
Frida’s health worsened as she got older
She struggled physically and with her mental health too
Through all her pain and suffering
Frida painted
She married, divorced and married her husband again
Frida became known and loved all over the world
For her unique artwork
And especially for her self portraits
Frida was a true mighty girl
She proved to women around the globe
That they could do anything
Be anything
Despite obstacles
Here at Edspire HQ we love Frida Kahlo
And admire her greatly for her courage and creativity
For being true to herself
Following her heart
And inspiring others to do the same
“Feet, what do I need you for, when I have wings to fly?”
