Book Review: Season of the Witch

The season is truly upon us.

Season of the Witch!

We have had a weekend filled with stories of witches, fungi hunts, spell writing and potion making. Esther and I finished The Bewitching of Aveline Jones and turned to this wonderful book to further research The Witch Trials and stumbled upon a page about witch bottles!!

Season of the Witch is a spellbinding history of witches and other magical folk.

The book is filled with stunning artwork that illustrates the history of magic from Mesopotamia through to the modern day.

We can read about medical magic, the Egyptian god of magic, magical jewellery from Ancient Greece, the herbal magic of Eastern Europe, Norse witches, medieval witch bottles, South African keepers of knowledge, the origins of vodou and European witch hunters.

The books shows young readers wands and familiars, cauldrons and potions, spells and incantations, vodou dolls and charms.

It is an absolutely fascinating book with tales of magic from around the globe.

We loved reading about Baba Yaga and Circe, the witch of Ancient Greece.

The book is filled with fascinating historical knowledge and is written in beautiful prose.

This is such a stunning book. One to read over and over and definitely one to support the reading of witch stories, and for anyone wanting to write a story of magic.

This book will cast a spell over readers young and old. It challenges stereotypes and shows witches through the ages as powerful and mysterious.

If you are looking for a spooky season read for middle grade this could be for you.

A bewitching beauty of a book filled with myths, legend and magic.
